We went on the air tonight with the breaking news that former First Lady Betty Ford has died at the age of 93.

Say the name, Betty Ford, and the first thing that comes to mind for most people is the Betty Ford Center, the substance abuse treatment center she founded near Palm Springs, California. Mrs. Ford also managed to take the stigma out of the battling breast cancer at a time when many women chose to keep that fight to themselves.

Betty Ford was also involved in a lot of causes that seem to recur on TRMS on a regular basis. She publicly supported abortion rights. She campaigned actively for the Equal Rights Amendment. And she lobbied for a woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court. There have since been four.

She lived a remarkable life and leaves behind a remarkable legacy.
