Romney: Obama’s ‘gifts’ cost me election

Updated

Mitt Romney has a new theory for why he lost the election—President Obama was giving freebies to voters.

The New York Times reports that in a conference call with his national finance team today, Romney claimed he lost because of “gifts” President Obama gave to minorities and young voters.

According to Romney, mandating insurance companies to cover contraception wasn’t a health care issue, it was a way to get college-aged women’s support. And the president’s directive to allow undocumented young people to apply for legal status wasn’t a way to deal with a broken immigration system—it was a gift to Hispanic voters.

Romney used similar language on the campaign trail, once telling a heckler “If you’re looking for free stuff you don’t have to pay for, vote for the other guy.”

Will Romney blame his loss on the debunked Obama phones next?
