The First Lady has finally revealed what inspired the most controversial decision to come out of the East Wing this year.

Michelle Obama told TV chef Rachael Ray on her daytime talk show that chopping her locks was her way of living out a "mid-life crisis," noting that she's less than a year away from turning 50.

"This is my midlife crisis, the bangs. I couldn't get a sports car,” Michelle Obama joked. “They won't let me bungee-jump. So instead, I cut my bangs."

Obama revealed the new hairdo a few days before the inauguration on her 49th birthday, in a tweet.

Fortunately, the president is a fan of his wife's new bangs. As he said at an inauguration event, "To address the most significant event of the weekend, I love her bangs. She looks good. She always looks good."

The rest of the interview is set to air on the Rachael Ray Show on Wednesday.
