Limbaugh insists Obama impeachment will never happen

Updated

While some Republicans may dream of it, President Barack Obama will never be impeached, according to Rush Limbaugh.

“There isn’t going to be any impeachment because there isn’t any political will. Even if you had a slam dunk legal case for it, you’re never going to succeed in impeaching the president unless there’s the political will for it,” Limbaugh said on his radio show Thursday in a segment noted by Buzzfeed.

“That would require Obama’s approval numbers in the 20’s,” he said. “And even then I’m not so sure that the people of this country would ever support removing the first black president. It’s just - it’s never going to happen.”

New poll: low approval ratings for Obama, GOP

Chuck Todd and Josh Barro join The Cycle to discuss the results of the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll that shows the president’s approval rating has hit an all-time low of 41%, and a low approval rating of 27% for the GOP.

Obama’s approval rating is at 45% according to the latest data from Gallup. Former President Bill Clinton’s approval rating remained well above that 45% mark during the months leading up to the House of Representative’s vote to impeach in late 1998. After the vote, he saw his approval numbers jump to an all-time high.

A handful of conservative Republicans have been riling up their base voters with talk of impeachment since the president was re-elected in 2012, but none have taken the big step of drafting articles of impeachment yet. Rep. Michele Bachmann accused the president of committing “impeachable offenses” last October, but said impeachment is a tool that is “used sparingly.” Texas Rep. Blake Farenthold said “you could probably get the votes in the House of Representatives to” impeach Obama, but said the Senate wouldn’t do it. Others, including Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, have criticized the president for “lawless” behavior but stopped short of calling for impeachment.

Limbaugh has made similar comments before, insisting on his show last month that “no matter how corrupt or lawless” the president may be, it would still be impossible to “impeach the first black president.”
