What’s On TODAY

Beginning Monday, April 14, NBC News’ “Today” will examine how important scientific findings on a child’s development can help parents play a major role in their baby’s evolution from pregnancy through early childhood. The series will be broadcast during the 8 a.m. hour of the program.

“Bringing Up Baby” will include the following segments:

Monday, April 14: Science and Technology. Through extensive research, scientists now know that outside experiences shape the growing brain of the baby while still in the womb. Co-anchor Katie Couric will take viewers through the experience of a pair of expectant parents as they learn about different techniques they can use to enhance their unborn child’s brain development.

Tuesday, April 15: Music and Intelligence. “Today” national correspondent Jamie Gangel will take a look at music’s impact on a child’s brain. At a time when most schools are cutting back on funding for music, new scientific studies are showing that there is an important connection between music and early brain development, especially for math and science skills.

Wednesday, April 16: The Workplace. Couric speaks with Rick Fersch, CEO of Eddie Bauer, about the company's excellent programs for working parents. The company, with such programs as on-site daycare centers and lactation rooms, two weeks leave with full pay for mothers and fathers, and a pediatric home nurse visit, is providing the time and resources for parents to nurture their children.

Thursday, April 17th: An interview with First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton on the White House conference on early childhood development. Language and the Brain. Extensive research has shown that within the first six months of life babies can hear and distinguish differences between speech sounds. Couric will examine how speaking to a child in "babytalk" actually helps them develop proper language skills.

Friday, April 18: Moral Development. In the age of single parents and double income households, Couric will take a look at how many schools have begun to teach values to children and how parents can instill civility in their children.
