The thin ideal that began in the sixties, gained momentum in the seventies. The weight of Miss America continued to plummet. In 1970, the average weight of Playboy Playmates was 11 percent below the national average and, in 1978, it dropped to 17 percent below the national average. From pin-up girls to poster girls, actress Farrah Fawcett, with her athletic figure and cover girl smile, paved the way for the next generation of sex symbols--the super models.
