1980's
The "hunger cult" was in full force by the 80's according to Wolf. Dieting articles went from 60 in the year 1979 to 66 in the month of January 1980 alone. In 1984, 300 diet books were on the shelves. Cited in "The Beauty Myth" are the results of a 1984 "Glamour" magazine survey of 33,000 women: "Seventy-five percent of those age 18 to 35 believed they were fat, while only 25 percent were medically overweight (the same percentage as men); 45 percent of the underweight women thought they were too fat. Respondents also chose as their most desired goal losing ten to fifteen pounds above success in work or in love." The "athletic look" lean and busty was at its height when supermodel Elle MacPherson graced the cover of "Sports Illustrated's" swim suit edition. | |
