NOW Today: What did last night mean?

03/14/12 06:50AM

Yesterday we wrote that last night's primary contests could be the most important to date in the 2012 nominating convention.  And that may be true. This morning there is a little more clarity, but still no clear pick for the Republican nominee.  The easiest point to make is that Newt Gingrich's loss in both Alabama and Mississippi means he'll face increasing calls to drop out of the race.  Gingrich says he won't, insisting that he's got a shot on the convention floor in Tampa.  But that scenario appears increasingly unlikely - Gingrich benefiting from floor moves, that is. read more

NOW Today: The most important to date

03/13/12 06:52AM

Is it or isn't it?That is, is it or isn't it a three way race? Everyone seems to have a different opinion about the state of the 2012 race, but most observers will tell you that - while it sounds like a broken record - tonight's contests are the most important to date. Why? For Newt Gingrich, a loss in these Deep South states would mean his "Southern Strategy" failed (with the exception of his home state ofGeorgia).  Losses by Mitt Romney would drive the narrative that the former Massachusetts governor cannot connect with a key base of the party. read more

Feeding zebras & the life of Newt Gingrich

03/12/12 04:51PM

How much does it cost to feed a zebra?  Newt Gingrich knew the answer to that when he was ten years old!  His campaign released a 16 minute film on the life and times of Newton Leroy McPherson.  We planned to run part of it in our segment on the 2012 race, but ran out of time.  Here are some gems from the video: how Newt used to play on tanks being used for rifle grenade practice, the first words that come to mind in describing his wife ("remarkably attractive"), and, as Alex Wagner tweeted this morning, the slew of references to cookies and zoos in the first two-minutes.Also out today, the Ob read more
