'The United States chose socialism'

That was the headline above an opinion piece Thursday in "Israel Today," a free daily newspaper owned and distributed by GOP mega donor Sheldon Adelson.

That was the headline above an opinion piece Thursday in "Israel Today," a free daily newspaper owned and distributed by GOP mega donor Sheldon Adelson.

The Las Vegas-based casino magnate -- whose $24.9 billion fortune currently makes him #14 on Forbes' list of the world's richest people -- has reportedly donated over $70 million to conservative super PACs and outside groups in 2012. Adelson and his wife, Dr. Miriam Adelson, first bankrolled former House Speaker Newt Gingrich to the tune of $20 million during the GOP primaries, before then shelling out another $20 million to "Restore Our Future," a super PAC supporting Governor Mitt Romney's bid for the presidency.

Adelson founded the free newspaper -- Israel's largest by circulation -- in 2007.

The sub-headline of the opinion piece reads: "The second candidacy of Obama in the White House is fated to lead to an economic recession bigger than 2008."

The 79-year-old CEO of the Las Vegas Sands corporation, donated to eight candidates this cycle, all of whom lost their respective races. Asked at Romney's election headquarters in Boston Tuesday night how his money had been spent, Adelson replied: "By paying bills, that's how you spend money. Either that or become a Jewish husband, you spend a lot of money."

A person close to the billionaire  told The Wall Street Journal that Adelson “wouldn’t lose sleep over the amount of money he spent,” adding that he was “disappointed but not discouraged.”

The source added that the casino owner would continue to take an active role in GOP politics, and in the future plans to “make conservatism appeal to a wider group of people, including Latino voters.”
