The PACs Strike Back

The Super PAC ad wars are heating up, with a new spot from Karl Rove's Crossroads GPS out today, and as well as one from the pro-Obama Priorities USA Action.

The Super PAC ad wars are heating up, with a new spot from Karl Rove's Crossroads GPS out today, and as well as one from the pro-Obama Priorities USA Action. The Crossroads ad, called "Basketball," portrays a fictional suburban mother who supported President Obama in the last election but now says "things have changed for the worse." Her kids haven't been able to find jobs and had to move back in with her after college. Says also says the President "wants more spending and taxes...That won't fix things."

Priorities USA Action released a response to "Basketball" along with their new spot, reading, "In our ads, we portray real life stories of Americans who were devastated by the decisions Mitt Romney made." While the statement also hits Romney for his record as Massachusetts Governor ("the state plunged from 37th to 47th in job growth"), their ad focuses on his time at Bain Capital. Titled "Loris," it features a former employee at the Ampad factory in Indiana, who was laid off after Bain Capital shuttered the plant in 1995. Loris Huffman says she didn't have health care when she was laid off, and claims Romney "made me sick."

Crossroads GPS is spending more than twice as much money on their ad, airing it in ten states at $9.7M. Priorities USA Action is folding their spot into the five state, $4M dollar buy they announced last week. Both ads are trying to disqualify the other candidates record of job creation, but have a strikingly different tenor. Which do you think is more effective?
