If you look at his prepared remarks, there were plenty of moments when Former President Bill Clinton went off script last night. That might explain why he didn't end his speech until 11:23p ET (you can also attribute the thunderous cheers of the convention crowd to that as well).
It's not surprising that the former President stole the show Wednesday. After watching the speech last night, former McCain-Palin Sr. Adviser Steve Schmidt said on msnbc that he wishes his party had someone who could deliver a message like President Clinton - but that the 42nd President is in a league of his own.
Team Obama knows the power of President Clinton's support, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that he's being deployed to campaign in two of the states arguably most critical to President Obama's re-election: Florida and Ohio.
