Campaigning on Marriage

President Obama’s position on same-sex marriage fully evolved on Wednesday, when he became the first sitting President to declare his support for marriage equality. Now, the President’s re-election campaign is trying to use the announcement to its political advantage. Shortly after the President made the news, he sent out an email soliciting donations from campaign supporters. Reports indicate that since then there has been a big uptick in fundraising. Seeing this as a way to galvanize his base and independents, his re-election team also unveiled a web video painting Mitt Romney as someone who is not only on the wrong side of history, but to the right of President George W. Bush on same-sex marriage. Alex and the panel had a substantive discussion today about the President’s announcement and what it means for the 2012 race.
