Texas student group cancels ‘Catch an illegal immigrant game’

Under increasing pressure from school administrators, peers, and the media, a University of Texas student group canceled the “Catch an illegal immigrant game” they had scheduled for Wednesday. Below is a screenshot of the Facebook event for the so-called “game” before it was removed by the Young Conservatives of Texas branch at UT.

The chairman of the group, Lorenzo Garcia, wrote Tuesday in a statement to local KVUE-TV that their members were concerned “the protest against the event could create a safety issue for our volunteers.”

But Garcia expressed no apologies for the fact that participants would have been hunting down “illegal immigrants” in a mock police sting He wrote, “though we will no longer be holding the event, I hope that the publicity surrounding the event will create debate among students.”

As Alex Wagner explained Tuesday, this is not the first time this group, or even this chapter, has engaged in divisive and cruel hijinks.  Just last month, for instance, they held an “Affirmative Action bake sale” to shame women and students of color. Watch Alex break down this latest submission to the archives of offensive and dehumanizing stories.
