A violent clash between the Egyptian military and supporters of deposed President Mohammed Morsi erupted Monday as tensions continued to escalate in the Middle East country. Dozens were killed and hundreds injured, NBC News reported

The Egyptian military ousted President Mohammed Morsi last week following days of demonstrations that erupted through the epicenter of Cairo’s Tahrir Square.

Gen. Abdul Fatah Khalil Al-Sisi announced the coup over state television, telling Egyptians that the military had seized power and the Constitution would be suspended for an interim transition period. Tanks, armored vehicles and troops advanced on the outskirts of Cairo as protesters cheered and set fireworks through the square.

Morsi was the first democratically elected leader of Egypt since Hosni Mubarak was overthrown last year following three decades of power.
