The refugee crisis in Europe headlined the news this week, as world leaders deliberated how best to handle the hundreds of migrants crossing into Europe, most through Hungary and Greece. 

Heavy rain pummeled Japan, causing landslides and localized flooding in the eastern part of the country, as Typhoon Etau forced the evacuation of more than 100,000 people. And a massive sandstorm engulfed Lebanon and Syria. 

The U.S. Open continued in New York City, and the nation observed the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
