This Week in Pictures: July 12-18

The news that Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 crashed in eastern Ukraine, near the border with Russia, came as a shock on Thursday. The tragedy is the second major catastrophe for the airline, following the disappearance of another Malaysia Airlines flight in March. That passenger plane has yet to be found, and its disappearance remains a mystery.

As the news broke about Thursday’s crash, Israel announced that it was launching a ground invasion in Gaza. The move came after a short-lived ceasefire brokered by Egypt.

Earlier in the week, Germany proved its mettle when it beat Argentina on Sunday to win the World Cup, making it the first time a European team has won the tournament in Latin America.
