It was a big week for sports, dominated by the World Athletics Championships in Beijing. On Aug. 22 there was a NASCAR night race in Tennessee, an event for which tickets were in high demand. Elsewhere, the Western & Southern Open in tennis concluded, the Winter Games NZ kicked off, baseball fans delighted and surfers turned on their night lights.
Fires raged on across the globe, burning in of Washington state, with new sparks in California as well as at a mill in Germany.
Migrants continued their northern trajectories past barbed wire and vast fields in eastern Mediterranean regions. Many have pushed on despite lacking food, water and shelter.
Topless women took over Times Square in the ‘Big Apple’ as anxiety gripped stock traders downtown. Stock markets tumbled on “Black Monday” on fears of China’s slowing growth, causing shockwaves across stock markets internationally.
North and South Korea were at the brink of war, with tensions escalating over South Korea’s broadcast of propaganda messages over a loudspeaker.
Protests over Lebanon’s trash crisis turned violent over the weekend and despite an emergency cabinet meeting on Tuesday, it seems the issue will continue to reek for at least some time.
