On Saturday, April 5, Afghans went to the polls to vote for a new president. Canada and Indonesia held legislative and parliamentary elections, respectively. And Indians began the world’s largest voting process on April 7 that will last more than a month and go through nine different phases, in order to allow the country’s 813 million eligible voters the chance to participate in country’s elections.

Rwanda remembered the country’s 1994 genocide. Pro-Russian demonstrators seized the admnistration in Kharkiv, raising tensions again between Russia and Ukraine. And Jews demonstrated against compulsory military service in Jerusalem.

The week was also peppered with more lighthearted and uplifting scenes: spring’s arrival, a kite festival in China, and Holi in Spain.
