President Obama will ask Democratic National Committee members to re-elect Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz as the party's chairwoman, a Democratic official said Monday.

The DNC is set to meet the day after Obama's inauguration to elect its leadership.

Wasserman Schultz, a mainstay on the 2012 campaign circuit, "doesn't shy away from the tougher fights," a key democratic adviser told Politico. Well-received by women and grassroots supporters, the outspoken Wasserman Schultz has often found herself in her GOP counterparts' line of fire—but hasn't hesitated in firing back.

Despite some speculation surrounding the president's support for the DNC chairwoman during the campaign, party officials credit her in part with helping the president carry her home state of Florida. Wasserman Schultz, a Jew and strong advocate for Israel, also helped squelch Republican efforts to paint Obama as anti-Israel.

Top Democrats now say Wasserman Schultz is the best fit to spearhead one of the party's main goals: Taking back the House.
