Wasserman Schultz calls out GOP ‘obsession with women’s bodies’

Updated

The head of the national Democratic party is pulling no punches in fighting back against the war on women, slamming Republicans’ “obsession with women’s bodies” Monday.

On The Rachel Maddow Show, Maddow and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz discussed state-level GOP efforts to roll back abortion rights. In Michigan, Republicans even banned a female Democratic lawmaker from speaking on the statehouse floor after she dared to use the word “vagina” last week during a debate over abortion rights.

Republicans “obsession with women’s bodies and controlling women’s bodies has really seeped all the way down so deeply, and the extremism has seeped so deeply, into the Republican Party that you’ve got state after state that is initiating this legislation,” said Wasserman Schultz, a Florida lawmaker who chairs the Democratic National Committee.

The congresswoman added that the “dramatically out-of-step, out-of-touch extremism that exists from the top to the bottom of the Republican Party is really, I think, finally startling and shocking to women.”
