Trashawn Macklin didn’t always listen to his mother’s directions. The nine-year-old loved to run around the apartment in Flint, Mich., even if she told him to stop and walk. He didn’t mind being away from home when he traveled to Georgia and South Carolina with family members. But “whenever he was ready to come home, he would call and say that,” his mother, Andrea Washington, told msnbc.
Trashawn was a devoted member of Saints of God Church and attended an after-school youth group program. He was a rising third grader at Freeman Elementary School. His mother said he never expressed an interest for a particular subject, but his teachers told her that he enjoyed math. When he wasn’t playing on the Xbox at home, he spent time with his younger sister or played football and basketball with his friends. If he could, said his mother, Trashawn would probably try to make a career out of basketball.
Trashawn was shot to death on July 15 along with his uncle and a family friend at an apartment in Flint. No arrests have been made.
