The disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 and its 269 passengers dominated the headlines this week. Nearly a week after the aircraft’s disappearance somewhere between Kuala Lampur and its destination, Beijing. The mystery has seemingly stumped investigators, as they remained – as of Friday morning – unable to offer answers as to what, exactly, happened after the airliner vanished early last Saturday morning.

An explosion in the East Harlem neighborhood of New York collapsed two buildings on Wednesday, injuring several people and killing at least eight.

Tuesday marked the third anniversary of the devastating Japan earthquake and tsunami. The bloody civil war in Syria marks its third year this weekend.

The funeral for a 15-year-old boy killed when he was hit in the head by a tear gas canister last summer sparked anti-government protests in Istanbul, Turkey; clashes continued in Caracas; and tensions between Ukraine and Russia continue to play out throughout the region. The week ended with a deadly blast in Pakistan. But dog shows, body-building contests, and the Iditarod provided lighter moments to the generally solemn week.
