This Week in Pictures: March 1-7

The tense standoff continued this week between Russia and Ukraine, with the Crimean peninsula becoming the epicenter of the power struggle. Clashes continue to seize Venezuela. And unrest in the Middle East, a deadly suicide bombing in Pakistan, and treacherous weather in France combined to provide a solemn drumbeat to the past week. But these somber scenes from across the globe were punctuated by the beginning of carnival parades in Brazil and Mardi Gras in New Orleans – with all of the colorful, ecstatic costumes that go along with them; the break out of spring in London; and the Academy Awards in Los Angeles.
