Thieves make off with millions worth of jewels in France

A band of thieves made off with millions of euros worth of jewels Wednesday southeast of Paris, leaving two burned out vans in their wake, according to police. More than a dozen armed attackers stole the precious jewels on a highway connecting Paris to Lyon, according to the Associated Press. The suspects fled in four cars and remain at large.

The drivers of the vans carrying the jewels were unharmed in the heist. According to the AP, no suspects have been named but the attack resembles other cases involving the Pink Panther gang, which has been credited with thefts totaling hundreds of millions of euros over more than 15 years.

Images from the scene of the crime showed the vans covered in black soot, with windows and doors burned out.

The Associated Press contributed reporting.
