#SpiritDay: Everyone deserves to be treated with kindness

Updated

Every year, millions of Americans change their social media photos purple to take a visible stand against bullying. The message behind #SpiritDay, which is sponsored by GLAAD, is simple: Everyone deserves to be treated with kindness.

One in four kids experience bullying, and that number is far higher among LGBT youth: eight in 10. On this day, youth who are bullied are reminded that they shouldn’t be ashamed to ask for help. And those who see bullying are reminded that being a bystander isn’t an option. Because it’s only through these conversations that a world free of bullying, harassment and shame can become a reality.

Join MSNBC in going purple today. Remember you are stronger than any bully, and when Spirit Day ends, keep being proud of who you are for the next 364 days of the year.
