Spies who loved me: NSA officials targeted crushes

Lovesick NSA officers over the years have used the agency's considerable spying resources to check up on romantic partners, the Wall Street Journal reported

Lovesick NSA officers over the years have used the agency's considerable spying resources to check up on romantic partners, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

Though rare, the cases are labeled as "LOVEINT"—for love intelligence, the Journal reported.

Employees involved in the spying, which the paper said involved mostly overseas communications of spouses, typically self-reported and were either reprimanded or fired.

Agency spokesman John DeLong told the Journal that, “NSA has zero tolerance for willful violations of the agency’s authorities."
