Social media friends are a fickle bunch. It seems Mitt Romney’s Facebook supporters are dropping off at a rapid pace since the Republican candidate lost his bid for the presidency last Tuesday.

Over the weekend, DisappearingRomney.com, a website tracking the drop-off in Romney’s Facebook likes cropped up to track the GOP candidate’s social media losses. Monday morning, the count stood at just over 12 million “likes”, and the Washington Post reported that the page lost 593 friends every hour.

It wasn’t immediately clear who was behind the Disappearing Romney website.

Despite the social media dropoff, Romney still counts more Facebook followers than John McCain and Sarah Palin, the Republicans’ losing 2008 ticket. McCain, who built up an online following after his defeat with tongue-in-cheek tweets at the likes of Jersey Shore’s Snooki, has a little more than 8,000 Twitter followers than Romney.

Romney himself last posted on Facebook and Twitter on Saturday, thanking his supporters for their vote.
