Notre Dame sues Obama administration over contraception coverage

Updated

University of Notre Dame has filed a lawsuit today against the Obama administration for requiring contraception coverage in its health insurance plans for employees. The lawsuit states that the contraception mandate violates Notre Dame’s “own conscience by making it provide, pay for, and/or facilitate those services to others, contrary to its sincerely held religious beliefs.”

The lawsuit also notes that the exemption the White House offered to religious organizations does not apply to Notre Dame because the university is self-insured, and the exemption only applies to colleges and universities that provide student health plans through a health insurance issuer.

Notre Dame ended its spring semester on May 11 and held its commencement ceremonies this past weekend. The lawsuit states that it is “too late for Notre Dame to bring its health plans into compliance with the law” because the details of its student health insurance plan for the following school year have already been established and cannot be changed in time to meet their summer deadline for changes.
