MSNBC's most viewed in 2012: Rush Limbaugh does not understand how birth control works

After right-wing radio host Rush Limbaugh's attack on Sandra Fluke, a Georgetown University law student who was prevented from testifying at a congressional hearing about the importance of having contraception covered by health insurance, in which he called her a "slut," Rachel Maddow called him out for fundamentally misunderstanding how birth control works.

Limbaugh, most disturbingly, argued that women were having "so much sex" that they were going broke paying for contraception. Ignoring the fact that a birth control pill is not needed every time a woman has sex, Limbaugh asserted that Fluke was a prostitute for wanting to receive payment for sex and that she should record her sexual encounters so that taxpayers can watch.

While Maddow pointed out that Limbaugh was essentially trolling America with his comments, she said that his offensive remarks betrayed just how confused he is by biology.

"I think that Rush Limbaugh thinks you take a birth control pill to avoid getting pregnant each time you have sex, so the more times you have sex, the more birth control pills you need...But you don't like, get, a new IUD every time you're going to have sex. You don't have to go buy an individual birth control pill to cover each sexual incident which might result in you becoming pregnant. You just take one pill every day."

President Barack Obama called Fluke personally to show his support after Limbaugh's vile comments.
