Michelle Obama breaks it down with Ellen DeGeneres

Updated

First lady Michelle Obama and comedian Ellen DeGeneres are at it again with another fitness competition, this time involving Mark Ronson’s popular song, “Uptown Funk.”

The two women break it down in a new video to promote Obama’s latest health challenge, titled “Gimme 5,” in honor of the fifth anniversary of her Let’s Move campaignObama has been actively engaged as an advocate for healthy eating since she launched the initiative in 2010. Her efforts aim to combat childhood obesity and ensure families have access to nutritional, affordable food in their communities.

The first lady is asking Americans to give her five ways they’re leading a healthy life. Along with stars from “So You Think You Can Dance,” Obama plans to take over the 137th White House Easter Egg Roll on April 6 with a choreographed routine, which she demonstrated on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” The White House expects more than 35,000 people will gather on the South Lawn for the annual and historical event next month.

Since Obama’s initiation of her campaign, large chain restaurants have offered menus with calorie-conscious options and organizations have planted gardens outside academic buildings. Additionally, thousands of American schools have reintroduced exercise into the curriculum, and at least 90% of U.S. public K-12 schools have implemented new lunch standards to serve more whole grains, lean protein, and an array of fruits and vegetables.

Singers Beyonce and Nick Jonas, as well as TV and radio personality Ryan Seacrest and NBA player Dwyane Wade, already have shared five ways they remain healthy.

Obama and DeGeneres, who participated in their own push-up competition two years ago, showcased their dance moves in their most recent appearance together. The first lady has demonstrated her dance moves in the past, including during the widely circulated “mom dance” with comedian Jimmy Fallon.

“There is some hip-thrusting,” Obama said. “There’s a lot of it.”

Obama began the challenge last month.
