Michael Sam, the first openly gay football player to be drafted by the NFL, confirmed on Twitter Friday that he is engaged.

"Thank you for saying yes," Sam tweeted to his new fiancé, Vito Cammisano. The Tweet was accompanied by a picture of Sam on one knee and a beaming Cammisano atop St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.

Sam posted a picture of the view on Jan. 7, which also happened to be his 25th birthday, but the engagement wasn't announced until Friday.

Cammisano also posted a Tweet Friday of his new diamond ring, with several expressive emojis.

Sam was cut from the Rams' roster in August but was signed to the Cowboy's practice squad a short time after. He was cut by the Cowboys in October, and is still waiting to be signed by another professional team.
