Kate del Castillo on El Chapo: Don’t believe everything said about me

Updated

Kate del Castillo, the Mexican actress who actor Sean Penn said helped set up his Rolling Stone interview with Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, said Wednesday that some of the things being reported about her aren’t true.

“Thank you for your support over the past few days,” Castillo wrote on Twitter in her first known comment on the case since the news made headlines around the world last week.

“Not surprisingly, many have chosen to make up items they think will make good stories and that aren’t truthful,” she said five days after Mexican authorities arrested the fugitive Guzmán in a shootout. “I look forward to sharing my story with you.”

A second tweet, sent at about the same time in Spanish, said the alleged fabrications were intended to “distract us from the real issues.”

Rolling Stone magazine last weekend reported a secret interview that Guzmán, who became one of the world’s most wanted fugitives after he escaped last year from a maximum-security Mexican prison, gave Penn in October. Images released to a Mexican newspaper showed that Penn and del Castillo were under surveillance.

El Chapo texts: Legal issues for actress?

MSNBC’s Ari Melber discusses the infamous text messages that were exchanged between Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán and Latin actress Kate del Castillo.

Mexican authorities have confirmed that they are investigating the October meeting, but they stressed that Penn and del Castillo aren’t the specific targets of that inquiry.

White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough told NBC News on Sunday that the U.S. government is less concerned with Penn interviewing the drug lord but he was “appalled” that Guzmán bragged to the actor that he moves more heroin than anyone in the world.
