Sen. John Kerry played the role of Mitt Romney in prepping President Obama for the debates. But the role he is believed to really want is the one that Hillary Clinton holds: Secretary of State.
Clinton has long said that she will step down from the post before Obama’s second term. But the Washington Post is reporting that Obama is considering Kerry for Secretary of Defense, and that Susan Rice, currently the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, is more likely to become Secretary of State. Kerry would be part of a reshuffle of the administration’s national security team that would now include a replacement for General Petraeus, who stepped down as CIA director because of an extramarital affair. Leon Panetta, currently the Secretary of Defense, has said that he will stay in the post until spring, so the timing of any shuffle is unclear.
