Jeffrey Tambor on Bruce Jenner: 'I'm just for people who want to make a change'

"I think [Bruce] Jenner has a right to do what Jenner wants to do, and the way Jenner wants to do it," the actor said.

Actor Jeffrey Tambor, who plays a transgendered woman on the Amazon TV show "Transparent," is encouraging Olympian Bruce Jenner with his transition to become a woman.

Under intense media scrutiny, Jenner, a 1976 U.S. Olympic gold medalist who is now best known as a reality TV star on "Keeping Up with the Kardashians," is currently undergoing the process to become a woman. The 65-year-old is Kris Kardashian's ex-husband.

Tambor voiced his opinion on the red carpet Monday night before the Point Foundation's Gala.

"I think Jenner has a right to do what Jenner wants to do, and the way Jenner wants to do it. I don’t think we should say, 'Oh, you have to come out this way, or you have to come out this way.' It's not fair," Tambor told reporters, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Point Foundation, a scholarship-granting organization for LGBT students of merit, held its event Monday at the New York Public Library in Manhattan. Tambor, who was the first-ever Golden Globe winner for a transgender role in January, received the Courage Award for advocating for the future of the LGBT community. In the show, he plays Maura Pfefferman, a father and husband who reveals that he always has wanted to be a woman, and makes the transition.

"I wish Jenner happiness and an authentic life. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness — that’s in the Constitution, damnit!" Tambor added, according to the Reporter. "I'm just for people who want to make a change." The actor is also well known for playing George Bluth Sr. and his twin, Oscar, in the Netflix TV series, "Arrested Development."

Jenner is expected to speak publicly for the first time about his transition in an upcoming interview this month.
