Washington D.C. is about to get a healthy dose of a maverick named Angus King.
The former governor of Maine secured a Senate seat with 51% of the vote Tuesday, having run as an independent against Charlie Summers (R), who received 28% of the vote and Cynthia Dill (D), who earned 14% of the vote, NBC News reported.
Sen. Olympia Snowe, one of the Senate’s last moderate Republicans, decided not run for re-election, giving the Dems a prime opportunity to pick up a seat.
The race was thrown into disarray, however, when King decided to run as an independent. King is somewhat of a wildcard because he’s refusing to say which way he’ll lean if he’s elected, though most politicos expect him to side with the Dems.
So far, four Democratic senators have also won another term including Bill Nelson in Florida, Sheldon Whitehouse in Rhode Island, Tom Carper in Delaware and Ben Cardin in Maryland. GOP Sen. Bob Corker was also re-elected in Tennessee.
