On Thursday, Jep and Jessica Robertson endorsed the governor of their home state, in an interview with Fox’s entertainment website, Fox411.
“I definitely would vote for him. He’s a very, very good man,” Jep Robertson said. “We’ve gotten to chat with him several times, kind of just talking, he’s a great dude … he’s very transparent, has a great family, so yeah I’d definitely give him my vote.”
Jep and Jessica aren’t the first “Duck Dynasty” stars to pledge their support to the Republican presidential hopeful and occasional guest star on the show. Back in April, Willie Robertson and his wife Korie told Fox News Radio’s “Kilmeade and Friends” that they would support Jindal if he chose to run.
“Bobby is a great man, he’s a godly man,” said Willie Robertson. “I’m the kind of guy who likes smart people … and that guy’s one of the smartest people I’ve ever met.”
Jindal officially launched his campaign for president on Wednesday. In his announcement speech, Jindal pledged, “I will do the things that you cannot do in Washington, and I will say the things you cannot say.”
Last year, Jindal defended Phil Robertson’s controversial comments about the LGBT community.
In a January 2014 interview with GQ, the Robertson family patriarch reflected on the “sin” of gay sex:
“It seems like, to me, a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”
When A&E indefinitely suspended Robertson for the remarks, Jindal complained, “I remember when TV networks believed in the First Amendment. It is a messed up situation when Miley Cyrus gets a laugh, and Phil Robertson gets suspended.”
That wasn’t the only time the governor has stuck his neck out for the Robertsons’ reality show. This year, Jindal has fought to preserve the show’s giant tax break, which amounts to $415,000 for every episode shot in Louisiana, despite his state’s $1.6 billion budget hole.
Jindal had an appearance on the sixth season premiere of Duck Dynasty. Msnbc’s Jane Timm wrote this summary of the governor’s scene:
“Jindal appears midway through the episode and plays basketball with the guys in the warehouse. One employee wagers a ride on Air Force One if Jindal doesn’t make a free throw shot. (Jindal makes the shot, saving everyone from having to explain that as the governor of Louisiana, Jindal does not have free access to the president’s airplane.)”
If a majority of Americans learn to see Jindal the way the Robertsons do, he’ll gain access to that plane in January of 2017.
