Dr. Ben Carson will launch his presidential campaign on May 4 in his hometown of Detroit, NBC News has confirmed.
Carson, a former pediatric neurosurgeon who has never held elected office but has won acclaim from conservatives for his tough criticisms of the Obama administration, formed a presidential exploratory committee in early March.
The Detroit News first reported the date of the announcement.
A recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll found that 41% of GOP primary voters said they could see themselves supporting Carson, while 18% said they could not imagine backing his campaign.
