State Rep. Alma Adams of Greensboro, North Carolina, won the Democratic nomination for the 12th Congressional seat Tuesday.

Despite an anticipated runoff, Adams, -- the only woman in the race -- took the lead with 43% of the votes.

“This race has been an excellent example of what’s so great about America – that we can all throw our hats in the race – some of us may have more hats than others - and have civil conversations and debates about the best way to move our state and nation forward,”Adams said in her victory speech

Adams was endorsed by EMILY's List -- the organization supporting Democratic women running for office.

Adams will face off against Republican Vince Coakley of Charlotte -- who won the primary with 78% off the vote.
