Kentucky Democratic Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes broke the state's fundraising record on Tuesday, with more than $4 million raised in the second quarter of the year.
Her challenger, Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, held the previous record with $2.9 million during a three-month stretch in his 2008 re-election race, according to the Lexington-Herald Leader.
Grimes's campaign has raised almost $11.3 million in all, with an average contribution of $25 from almost 84,000 supporters, according to a statement from the campaign.
"Kentuckians are coming together to invest in our campaign because they recognize that Alison Lundergan Grimes will bring a new generation of leadership to the U.S. Senate," said Jonathan Hurst, Grimes's campaign manager.
McConnell's fundraising figures have not been released yet.

As the Senate minority leader attempts to paint Grimes -- who currently serves as Kentucky's secretary of state -- as trying to destroy the coal industry, Grimes continues to promote her message that McConnell is out of touch with the needs of residents in the Bluegrass State.
According to RealClearPolitics' latest polling figures, McConnell and Grimes are neck and neck in the race, with the incumbent holding a very slight lead.
