John Lewis's activism in his early twenties made him a prominent individual in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, or SNCC (snick). The group worked hard to register voters in Selma, Alabama despite violence and turned to Dr. Martin Luther King for help. Soon, the relationship between SNCC (snick) and King soured, but John Lewis continued to see the reverend as a mentor and hero.
