Chapter 1The law firm of Finley & Figg referred to itself as a “boutique firm.” This misnomer was inserted as often as possible into routine conversations, and it even appeared in print in some of the various schemes hatched by the partners to solicit business. When used properly, it implied that Finley & Figg was something above your average two-bit operation. Boutique, as in small, gifted, and expert in one specialized area. Boutique, as in pretty cool and chic, right down to the Frenchness of the word itself. read more

 Texas Governor Rick Perry is making headlines for so-called “birther” comments he made during an interview with Parade Magazine. Originally, Perry said he had no reason to think that President Obama was not born in the United States. However, when pushed further, the Texas Governor said he could not be sure that the President’s long-form birth certificate was real. read more

Then he said the fence might be electrified after all. Sorry for the digression, but I’m just trying to keep up. What’s no joking matter is that, to the extent that the Republican candidates deal at all with international affairs, it tends to be in a way that’s shockingly vapid and unsophisticated. Chapter 1 Forty Million Ways to Be Black Once, I went skydiving. For about four minutes in 2007 I was above—and plummeting rapidly toward—a small town in the middle of the Florida panhandle. Jumped out of the plane solo at 14,000 feet. I did it for a TV show called “I’ll Try Anything Once” in which every week I accepted fear-inducing challenges. On the way to the skydiving center the production team stopped for lunch at a restaurant where three middle-aged Black men who worked there recognized me from TV and came over to our table to say hi. read more
