Father-daughter writing duo Marvin and Deborah Kalb wrote the book "Haunting Legacy: Vietnam and the American Presidency From Ford to Obama." Here is an excerpt from the book.          In time, depressing realities crowded into the Oval Office, perhaps none more depressing than the fact, now officially embroidered into NATO strategy, that the United States would be “on the offense,” engaged in combat operations in Afghanistan, through at least 2014. With less than a week to go before the August  2nd deadline, House Speaker John Boehner is now re-doing his plan to raise the debt limit. The congressional budget office says the Speaker's plan would fall short of the $1.2 trillion in spending cuts it proposes  and the specific cuts would be $300 billion less than thought. read more
