In the wake of the mass shooting in a Connecticut elementary school, the National Rifle Association has been courting women aggressively.
The group has brought on a new spokeswoman, Natalie Foster, the blogger from Girl’s Guide to Guns, and they brought in a woman to testify in favor of assault weapons in Congress (“Guns make women safer” and deter home invasions, said Gayle Trotter.) Last month, the NRA launched a new women’s site that caters to their “armed and fabulous” members.
“That [push for women] was really on display down at the convention,” NBC News reporter Kasie Hunt said on Monday’s Morning Joe, describing the NRA’s annual convention this past weekend. “There was a giant pick-up truck painted pink with the slogan ‘lipstick and lead.’ These bra holsters that you mentioned, so you can carry a small gun on your person that no one can see strapped to your bra, [and] there’s also handbags that are designed after coach bags that have pockets on the inside with Velcro so you can keep your holster there [for easy access].”
The NRA is trying to counteract the gender gap in the gun debate: an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll last month found that 65% of women favor stronger gun laws, while 44% of men support them.
