Jeremy Scahill on the future of Libyan stability

Updated

The always-insightful Jeremy Scahill joined us this morning, and he brought with him a barrel of insight into what’s happening in Libya.

And since at least Monday, we’ve heard from people who’ve pontificated on what the fate of the collection of the Libyan rebels and the Transitional National Council will be once they reached their goal of ousting Gadhafi. Once the glue of the common objective has been realized, what happens? Scahill briefly touched on that, but he considered the outcome from a different, somewhat-worrying angle.

He discussed the difficulty in knowing exactly who these rebels are:

“At the end of the day, you have to move past the euphoria and say ‘Who are the people that will be running Libya?’ It’s a coalition of people that are very untested on the international scene, and I think that the possibility of Libya continuing to be incredibly unstable for a long time to come is certainly there. And who are these guys? Are they Islamists? Are they corrupt sheikhs? Who is it that we’re backing right now?”

Those are questions that many are asking. And now that those rebels are reportedly offering a reward and/or amnesty for a capture or kill and things continue to take a darker shade, it appears to be a question the world will continue asking.
