Control Room Confessions

As the director of Morning Joe I do not get to write very much but this blog will give me a chance to pull the curtain back on the inner workings of the show. I have been the director of MJ since its launch and for that matter I have been with Joe 8 years, May 1st 2003 to be exact. I started with Joe on Scarborough Country, his primetime show that ran from 2003-2007. When the opportunity arose to move to mornings I took it. Not only because I believed in Joe and what the show could become but personally the time was right for a change and my 2 sons were starting school. The timing couldn’t have been better. So here we are just about 4 years in and things are really moving along. By the way, I also direct Willie Geist’s show Way Too Early at 5:30a. That’s 3 1/2 hours of directing live tv a day for me. All of which is done with the same crew. A great crew that you will hear more about in the weeks to come. I will highlight a crew member of the week to showcase what they do to make the show happen. I will also point out from time to time that everything doesn’t always go smoothly. Some of you may have noticed one day last week Way too Early did not air. We had a major technical failure that happened at the wrong time resulting in First Look airing at 5:30a. Not a fun morning as you could imagine. I will post some behind the scenes pics and explain what goes into the making of Morning Joe. For example, a few weeks ago Bradley Cooper was a guest on our show. He has been on a bunch of times before and is a friend of the show. In our profession it is common courtesy not to bother stars with autographs or pics. But from time to time that rule gets broken when the opportunity warrants. My wife Monica LOVES Bradley Cooper so after the show I kept debating if I should grab a quick pic with him just to make her jealous. Well I did! I told Bradley exactly that and he found it very funny to make her jealous that I took a picture with him and not her. I actually never do stuff like that but it is fun once in a while. More to come soon…
