Axelrod: Issa should 'step away' before sending GOP over the cliff

House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa threatens to take the Republican Party "over the cliff," David Axelrod, former campaign adviser to President Obama, said on Tuesday.

"If I were Republicans, I would say to Issa, in the parlance of his old business, 'Please step away from that car,' " Axelrod said in reference to Issa's previous business selling car alarms on Morning Joe.

The IRS maintains that two "rogue" administrators at the agency's Cincinnati office were responsible for singling out conservative Tea Party groups for scrutiny in their applications for tax-exempt non-profit status. In response, Republican Rep. Issa of California called White House Press Secretary Jay Carney a "paid liar," which prompted some Republicans to urge him to tone it down.

In April, Issa led the charge against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, trying to blame her for the security deficiencies at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, before the deadly attack last September.

A Congressional report on IRS spending is expected to be released on Tuesday.
