November 9, 1998 "King:...He has chosen death: Refusing to eat or drink, that he may bring Disgrace upon me; for there is a custom, An old and foolish custom; that if a man Be wronged, or think that he is wronged, And starve upon another's threshold till he die, The Common People, for all time to come, Will raise a heavy cry against that threshold, Even though it be the King's." · from The King's Threshold by W.B. Yeats I feel like today was a week long. Since the Post-Gazette story came out today, I have had calls from TV stations and newspapers. Nadia's story has been told in different parts of the country...but still, not a single newspaper or TV station will pick her story up here. My e-mail boxes were full, my mail box was full, my phone rang off the hook. I try to talk to everyone and be cooperative and polite. I'm tired and it is with great effort that I try to keep up with only my communications for I no longer have the stamina to do much else. Mentally I continue to have a difficult time concentrating and therefore take a great deal of time to compose a letter, checking it and rechecking it. I use to not pay attention to typos, but now, I try very hard not to look mentally incapable of any task. I received a new computer age-enhanced picture of Nadia today. She is beautiful. I treasure even the most obscure "impression" of her, for it is all I have. There are no annual school pictures of Nadia sitting in frames on my desk. This is what I live with. Senator Robb's office sent out the resolution to the State Department, Syrian embassy and Interpol on Oct. 27. I have heard nothing from any agency, and am told the Syrians have not yet responded. Support for Nadia's return continues to grow. Chat rooms have been created on the internet for meetings on efforts to help by concerned citizens. Strangers have tried to have pizza delivered to my home in an effort to stop my fast. They are concerned and they are good people. So many have worked so hard to get her home. She is probably the most famous child on the internet, yet ...the media is only just now looking at her plight and taking an interest. I am so tired. |
