With its decision to do away with DOMA and affirm marriage equality, the Supreme Court belatedly got on board a train that had already left the station. Popular support for same-sex marriage first outpaced opposition two years ago. But with their ruling on the Voting Rights Act, they opened the door to future challenges that could end affirmative action altogether, which could end the kind of progressive momentum around race policy we witnessed this week for marriage equality.
