It is President’s Day weekend – which means that it is also an opportunity to reflect on the men who have served as President of the United States. And yes, it is a time to also reflect on the fact that Presidents have only ever been men.
On today’s show, we talked about what happens when male leadership is the only model we have for our politics. As such, I’m suggesting a few books that help us challenge our typical vision of men and presidential leadership.
- “First Ladies: From Martha Washington to Michelle Obama,”by Betty Boyd Caroli. This book is a great overview of America’s First Ladies, and a reminder that women have influenced the American presidency since the beginning.
- “It Takes a Candidate: Why Women Don’t Run for Office,”by Jennifer Lawless and Richard Fox. This book offers surprising analysis of why so few women hold elected office in our country.
- “Grace for President,” by Kelly DiPucchio. This is a children’s book you should share with every girl, and every boy, in your life.
No, this doesn’t all need to be read by the end of the weekend. But there may or may not be a quiz.
