Ted Cruz cruises to online stardom

Updated

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz’s 21-hour speech protesting the Affordable Care Act didn’t succeed in defunding President Obama’s signature legislative achievement—but don’t be so quick to count it as a failure.

Cruz’s stunt may have given him the push he needs to cement himself as a national star ahead of the 2016 presidential election, and certainly boosted his national following on Twitter: the Tea Party favorite gained more than 20,000 new followers between Tuesday and Wednesday—10 times the average number of followers Cruz normally gains in a day.

Although Cruz is enjoying his current position as one of the faces of the movement to defund Obamacare, some members of his own party have turned against him. Republican Congressman Michael Grimm blasted Cruz on MSNBC Wednesday, saying that Cruz’s libertarian views were only representative of “maybe 12-13% of our country.”

On Friday, in a rebuke to Cruz and his Tea Party cohorts, the Senate voted against defunding Obamacare.
